Greener Pastures

Greener Pastures

Greener Pastures Equine Mortality Service provides two distinct services.

For those horse owners who prefer to bury their horse on property of their own, we will bring an excavator in and bury the horse at that site. For owners who cannot or choose not to bury their horses at home, Greener Pastures will compassionately remove the horse and take it to a site where it is composted. This process is done according to Cornell Waste Management Institute guidelines with DEC oversight.

The idea of Greener Pastures was developed after conversations with a local veterinarian discussing the need for a compassionate option for horse owners to lay their horses to rest. Due to limited options, rendering is the option most horse owners have to face. As a horse owner, I began to look at other options.

Through extensive research and planning with Cornell Waste Management Institute, Department of Environmental Conservation, Cornell Cooperative Extension-Equine, Department of Agriculture and Markets, and Cornell Cooperative Extension – Washington County, Greener Pastures was born.

Composting allows the horse to return to the earth undisturbed while protecting the local soil and water supplies. Composting is available year round including the winter months when burial is not an option.
